This Minecraft tutorial explains how to make fire with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.
In Minecraft, you can start flammable items on fire with either flint and steel or a fire charge. You can also create an everlasting fire if you use netherrack. Let's explore how to make a fire as well as how to put a fire out.

Required Materials to Start a Fire

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to make a fire:

Make a Fire

Once you have either flint and steel or a fire charge, select it in your hotbar. In this example, we will use flint and steel.
Next, position your pointer (the plus sign) on the block that is flammable such as this birch tree. You should see the block become highlighted in your game window.
TIP: You can only set flammable items on fire such as wooden objects, grass, leaves, etc. You can not set stone items on fire.

The game control to use the flint and steel depends on the version of Minecraft:
  • For PC/Mac, right click on the block.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the block.

You should hear a click sound and the block should be set on fire. The fire will burn all flammable blocks around it and continue to spread.

Make an Everlasting Fire

In Minecraft, fire will burn and spread until it has consumed the flammable blocks around it. But what if you wanted to make an everlasting fire to add a fireplace to your home? Easy enough, you can do this by setting blocks of netherrack on fire.
how to make a fire
To make an everlasting fire, place 2 blocks of netherrack on the ground and then surround it with many layers stone so that the fire can not spread.
WARNING: DO NOT SET YOUR HOUSE ON FIRE!!!
Remember that stone does not burn! So to be safe, build the floor and walls around the fireplace out of some type of stone (even on the outside of your house).
And build the roof of your house and the floors between the storeys of your house out of a stone. Otherwise your house will probably catch on fire from your fireplace!
After you ignite your fireplace, walk around the inside and outside of your house and make sure that no flammable blocks have been set on fire. If you find a block on fire, put it out and replace it with stone.
Then set each of the blocks of netherrack on fire with the flint and steel. The game controlto use the flint and steel depends on the version of Minecraft:
  • For PC/Mac, right click on the netherrack.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the netherrack.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the netherrack.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the netherrack.

Again, you will hear a click and the netherrack will start on fire. This type of fire will burn forever. You should now have a beautiful fireplace. As one final touch, add two iron bars in the front of the fire to create the perfect fireplace.

Put out a Fire

Let's quickly discuss how to put out a fire in Minecraft. Maybe your fire has gotten out of control and is burning down your house or you are just tired of seeing your fireplace burning. You can put out the fire at any time and you don't need water to do it.
The game control to put out the fire depends on the version of Minecraft:
  • For PC/Mac, left click on the burning block.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the burning block.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click on the burning block.
  • For Wii U, press the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Education Edition, left click on the burning block.
You will hear a sizzle sound and the flames on the block should disappear. If the block has been burning for a long time, it may disappear as well.
You will need to put out the fire on all burning blocks or your fire will continue to spread to other flammable items.
Congratulations, you just learned about fire in Minecraft.
