In this tutorial, you will learn about the various components of dribbling and ball control that will turn you into a skilled dribbler. We will be covering the following sections.

1. Key Dribbling Abilities
2. Types of dribblers in PES
3. Dribbling Modes
4. Basic of Dribbling
5. Top Dribbling Tricks, How and When to Execute Them
6. Three Additional Advanced Techniques to Beat Defenders

1. Dribbling Abilities

A skilled dribbler has high ratings in these abilities. Use these players to your advantage.

Ball Retention – The player is able to retain possession despite pressure from opponents.
Dribbling Speed – The player can move quickly when he has the ball.
Ball Control – The player can trap the ball and perform feints well.
Dribbling – The player can dribble well.
Body Balance – The player is able to shield and protect the ball from opponents.

Some dribbling tricks require the player to possess certain player skills cards. The cards are as follows.

01 Scissor Feint – The player is able to perform crossovers at high speed.
02 Flip-Flap – The player is able to perform the flip-flap made famous by Ronaldinho.
03 Marseille Turn – The player is able to do the 360 spin effectively, a signature move of Zinedine Zidane, as well as reverse 360 turn.
04 Sombrero – The player is good at dribbling tricks that involves flicking the ball up.
05 Precise Touch – This player can perform tricks such as L-Feint, Inside Bounce aka Stop-Start, and Stationary Kick Feint.

Players without these cards may still able to perform the tricks, but those with these cards will be able to execute them smoother while maintaining control of the ball.

If you are playing Coach mode, the following 3 cards will be useful to you.

01 Trickster – The player has a bagful of dribbling tricks to fool the defender.
02 Mazing Run – The player likes to dribble deep into the opponent’s area.
04 Incisive Run – The player likes to dribble and cut into the box from the wings.

These cards are COM Playing style cards, which means that they are only applicable when the players are controlled by the AI.

2. Types of Dribblers

Before we proceed further, it will be beneficial to learn more about the characteristics of dribblers. There are two main types of dribblers in Pro Evolution Soccer; I call them Speedsters and Bulldozers.

2.1 Speedsters

Speedsters are fast and agile. They are usually small to medium-built, packed with great pace, have high rating in ‘Dribbling Speed’, and possess a number of dribbling skill cards. Speedsters beat defenders with tricks and speed. However, they are physically shorter and weaker than most players, and may be pushed off the ball by strong defenders.

When dribbling with these players, use pace to your advantage. Defenders who are physically strong tends to have low ratings in speed and agility. Speedsters are able to get past these defenders by sprinting past them. I will recommend you to play these players on the flanks. This allows them to dash past defenders along the sidelines and cut into the penalty box. Use your midfielders to play lofted through passes to these players in order to utilize their speed.

Avoid placing these dribblers in a central role as it will be hard for them to beat the two central defenders. In addition, they are not good headers of the ball and will not be able to latch on crosses into the box. Examples of such players are Walcott, Neymar and Messi.

2.2 Bulldozers

Bulldozers are physically strong and have high rating in ‘Body Balance’ and ‘Ball Retention’. They tend to be slow dribblers, relying more on strength and less on tricks. Bulldozers are able to withstand the physical pressure of defenders and have no problems shielding the ball, waiting for support and laying the ball off to a teammate. As these dribblers are unable to outrun defenders over a long distance, they should only dribble when they are close to the box, where they can physically force their way in and take a shot at

These players should ideally take up the Central Striker position, as they are able to compete physically with the strong central defenders. We can also position them tactically to face a central defender who may not be physically strong, and give our strikers an advantage when it comes to physical battles. They are also good headers of the ball and are suitable for meeting crosses. Some of these players include Drogba and Berbatov.

2.3 Combination

Once in a while, there comes along a player who fits the bill of both types of dribblers. Not only are they fast and skillful, they also possess sufficient physical strength to withstand pressures from strong defenders. The first name that comes to mind is Cristiano Ronaldo. Luis Suarez also fits this role. Depending on where they are positioned, you can use them to sprint past defenders, cut into the box, or shield the ball and wait for support. They are usually the main focal point of attack in their teams.
